 Pomegranate may be the most abundant source of dietary antioxidants, which are important in controlling the damage done by free radicals.
What exactly are free radicals? Cells are composed of a variety of molecules. Molecules are made up of two or more atoms. Electrons bind these atoms together. Sometimes this bond splits, creating an unstable molecule—a free radical. Free radicals try to regain stability by capturing another electron from a stable molecule. This sets off a chain reaction that can lead to the destruction of a living cell.
Free radicals occur naturally in the cells, but our polluted environment is also a major contributor to this problem. The damage caused by free radicals has been linked to diseases such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, atherogenesis and cancer.
